Light Therapy

Light Therapy, a Light Against Winter Blues and Seasonal Depression
In winter, for a number of people, they have a low morale. The light in the summer is a long way off with the days that are getting shorter
seasonal depression
aswell as winter blues can affect us. One person out of five will be affected by the arrival of autumn. Light therapy is an ideal way to recharge the batteries so that we can find the energy linked with the light.
The winter season which depresses us
The loss of light affects directly our morale. One summers day brings a light intensity of 100 000 lux (light intensity) and in the bright office, we recieve only 400 lux. This contrast affects directly our matabolisme by the changes of our hormones with an over production of melatonin (sleeping hormone) during the day.
Light therapy, a treatment against winter blues and seasonal depression
Light therapy can be used in the home or in a number of hospitals.
The use at home of this light therapy can be used for comfort.
How to use it
All you have to do is be exposed to a light therapy lamp, at a respectable distance and a duration of time. The results of this treatment are quite quick as it consists of sending a light message via the retina and the nurotransmitters so as to inhabit the secretion of the melatonin.

1. Synthesis and characterization of phenothiazine based dye complexes for photodynamic therapy. 2. Synthesis and characterization of lithium ion fluorophores. $49.99 1. Synthesis and characterization of phenothiazine based dye complexes for photodynamic therapy. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an innovative approach for the treatment of cancer utilizing photosensitizers, light and oxygen. Phenothiazine-based photosensitizers are effective for PDT because of their high quantum efficiency, absorbance of light in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum, ease of modification, biodegradability among other properties make them ideal candidates. Previous studies in our labs have used dyes such as Azure B, Malachite green and Fluorescein. These dye molecules were chemically modified and bound to hemoglobin and subsequent quantum efficiency and oxygen binding studies were carried out. Purity of the starting materials and finding ways to effectively purify and characterize the modified Dye-Hemoglobin complex posed challenges to previous workers. Addressing the purity issues as well as developing an efficient method for synthesizing Dye-Folate complexes with folic acid attached to guide the complex to a specific tumor target formed the basis of the current research. Phenothiazine was used as the starting material and several modifications have been prepared in order to effectively bind with hemoglobin and folic acid. The purity issues as well as the reactivity have been addressed. The synthesized complexes, including a Malachite green dye-folate complex, were characterized and subjected to spectroanalytical studies. The most promising candidates were then tested on tumor cell lines. 2. Synthesis and characterization of Li+ fluorophores. Lithium salts continue to be the most promising drugs in the treatment of acute episodes and the prevention of relapses in patients suffering from bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression). The pharmacologic mode of action of Li+ is still a matter of conjecture and a detailed understanding of the biological action of Li+ is lacking. The therapeutic range of Li+ (0.5 to 1.2 mM) is not far |

A Guide to Neuropsychological Testing for Health Care Professionals $65 Neuropsychological assessments are now widely used to identify learning disabilities and shape educational interventions. However, many special education teachers, speech therapists, lawyers, pediatricians, psychiatrists, rehabilitation counselors, and a host of other “helping” professions know very little about how to interpret and act on information contained in neuropsychological assessments. The neuropsychological evaluations discussed in this text help shed light on a wide variety of psychiatric and medical conditions, including learning disabilities, severe and persistent mental illness, traumatic brain injury, neuropsychiatric disorders with accompanying chronic cognitive deficits, and acquired or congenital neurological conditions. This book emphasizes the breadth and depth of neuropsychological assessments and the many practical uses they have, such as treatment planning, diagnosis, interventions, and many more. The authors offer practical guidance on neuropsychological testing and assessment across the lifespan, from pediatric through geriatric patients. The book is designed specifically for those professionals with little to no training in neuropsychology that need to apply knowledge gleaned from neuropsychological assessments. Key topics discussed: Neuropsychological testing and psychoanalysisUsing neuropsychological instruments in school settings: possibilities and limitationsUsing neuropsychological information in vocational rehabilitation planningNeuropsychology and speech/language therapy |

A Path Through The Sea $0.99 In this frank, instructive, and heartening personal story, Lillian Grissen tells about the severe depression that she herself experienced. Her pain – mental, emotional, and physical pain – was excruciating, and at first she felt hopelessly trapped in it. But with the help of a gifted Christian psychiatrist, Grissen began to stop blaming herself and to confront the core of her problem – her relationship as a child with her mother. Over a period of five long years – also with her husband’s support, her pastor’s compassionate counsel, and the right combination of therapy and medication, and God’s gracious strength – Grissen gradually climbed out of the pit of her depression. “A profound yet simple book about a complex condition: clinical depression. Only one who has experienced the pain of the darkness of depression and the joy of the light of recovery could have had the courage to trace the arduous journey.” – Katie Funk Wiebe, author of Bless Me Too, My Father |

A novel multitargeted approach for therapeutic invervention of Alzheimer’s disease. $49.99 The pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is linked to the aggregation of beta-Amyloid peptide (Abeta) that undergoes a cascade of ordered events that lead to generation of senile plaques—a hallmark of AD. Although a century has passed since its discovery, effective treatment of AD is vastly limited to an armamentarium of drugs that do not affect the amyloid cascade and have modest effects on disease progression. Therefore, AD therapy represents an unmet medical need. In addition, since AD is a unique multifaceted disease with several pathologies, a double pronged approach using one therapeutic agent that targets more than one pathological hallmark of AD will be more effective than mono therapy—which is the target of contemporary therapy. In light of current status, this dissertation argues and provides compelling evidence in favor of using single therapeutic moiety-sterically stabilized micelles (SSM) towards two distinctive features of AD-namely amyloid aggregation and inflammation. Using physicochemical in vitro techniques and cell culture paradigm, it is demonstrated that SSM are able to constrain Abeta peptide in a alpha-helical non-amyloidogenic conformation and reduce beta-sheet formation. Interaction of SSM with Abeta also reduces, both, the extent and rate of the peptide aggregation as evinced by Congo red and Thioflavine binding as well as laser light scattering and electron microscopy studies. Not only are significantly lower number of oligomeric Abeta formed upon treatment with SSM, but SSM are also able to disaggregate preformed fibrils and mitigate Abeta induced neuronal death in SHSY-5Y and N2a neuroblastoma cells. In addition, it has also been demonstrated that SSM possess innate anti-inflammatory activity against Abeta mediated release of pro-inflammatory mediators. Upon treatment with SSM after stimulation with Abeta, significantly lower concentration of nitric oxide and interleukin 1beta are generated. SSM also mitigated NF-kB activation |

A psychoanalytic exploration into the Arab self and implications for therapy with Arabs in the United States. $49.99 This study explores endemic cultural facets of the Arab self and the manner in which it may manifest itself within psychotherapy. Contemporary psychoanalytic ideas are applied to the cultural context within which Arab individuals are embedded and from which they draw their personal meaningful experiences. The applicability of psychoanalytic theories to the understanding and treatment of Arab individuals and families in America is evaluated in light of scant literature on the theory and practice of psychotherapy with this underserved population. Beyond the dearth of empirical data on the experience of Arab Americans with psychotherapy, extant scholarship essentially lacks a conceptual framework to understand the unique endemic features of this population. This study sheds light on the diversity and fluidity of Arab identity, clarifying both past and present experiences of Arabs as immigrants in the United States. The impressions of Islam on Arabic culture, family, and society are also discussed, underscoring the religion’s psychological corollaries to the Arab self. This dissertation addresses the question of the cultural compatibility of psychoanalytic approaches to the Arab self, arguing in support of applying psychoanalytic thinking and its clinical practice to Arab patients. To that end, traditional and contemporary psychoanalytic theories of identity are reviewed, and some of their limitations in understanding Arab psychology are delineated. Relational and interpersonal constructs, such as the "assimilative" and "decentered" self, "cultural-relational matrices," "dissociated self-states," "standing in the spaces," and "managing self as object," are expanded upon and contextualized as they pertain to Arab patients. Accordingly, a new theory of the Arab self is offered with an understanding of both healthy and pathological expressions. Finally, implications for therapy are discussed as they relate to the |

A study of counseling process using critical qualitative methods: A focus on caring in a cross-cultural dyad between a White male therapist and a Korean national female client. $49.99 The concept of caring has been neglected in the field of counseling psychology despite the intuitive importance of this construct for counseling process and outcome. Related concepts, such as Rogers's three facilitative conditions for therapeutic change, have been frequently studied, but they also may not fully capture what some authors describe as caring. This investigator proposes that caring is likely a common factor for successful therapy outcome regardless of theoretical orientations and that a study of caring expression (and the lack thereof) in cross-cultural therapy can shed light on the value of this common factor on counseling process and outcome. This dissertation study was conducted to investigate how caring occurs in a cross-cultural counseling dyad as evidenced in 12 consecutive weekly sessions between a White male counselor and a Korean female international student. The three questions posed in the research are: (1) whether the therapist acts in ways to communicate caring and, if so, how?, (2) how does the client respond to the therapist's displays of caring?, and (3) how does the therapist's caring change over the course of counseling? Critical qualitative research methods were applied for the research study. In particular, reconstructive analysis which is an approach advanced by Carspecken (1996) was used to generate a horizon of possible meanings or meaning fields, thus lending to interpretation of the therapy discourse. The results of the data analysis indicate that the therapist used various tactics of caring consistently over the course of therapy. The exchange of caring expression appeared to be important in establishing trust and a bond within the relationship. The most frequently used therapist caring tactics include (a) communication of understanding of the client, (b) validation/appreciation/praise of the client, and (c) self-disclosure. The client's most frequently used caring tactics are (a) caring laughter, (b) |

Large numbers of people are now characterized and characterize themselves as sufferers of psychological injury caused by the actions of others. In contrast with the familiar critiques of victim culture, Accounts of Innocence offers a new and empirically rich perspective on the question of why we now place such psychological significance on victimization in people’s lives. Focusing on the case of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, Joseph E. Davis shows how the idea of innocence shaped the emergence of trauma psychology and continues to inform accounts of the past (and hopes for the future) in therapy with survivor clients. His findings shed new light on the ongoing debate over recovered memories of abuse. They challenge the notion that victim accounts are an evasion of personal responsibility. And they suggest important ways in which trauma psychology has had unintended and negative consequences for how victims see themselves and for how others relate to them. An important intervention in the study of victimization in our culture, Accounts of Innocence will interest scholars of clinical psychology, social work, and sociology, as well as therapists and victim activists. |

Advances in Genetics $164.64 Advances in Genetics has established itself as an outstanding vehicle for the dissemination of research results in genetics. Once again, authoritative papers are presented here, beginning with a review by Rai and Black highlighting the salient features of mosquito genomes and their evolution. The recent progress which has been made by the cloning and characterization of two cooperating partners of the Neurospora blue light signal transduction chain is presented by Linden, Balario, Arpaia, and Macino. The emergence of the concept of X-linked mental retardation (XLMR) is discussed by Neri and Chiurazzi, as well as epidemiologic data and XLMR gene updates. In chapter 4, Mahato, Smith, and Rolland provide insights into the potentials of plasmid-based gene therapy and critical evaluation of gene delivery sciences and clinical applications of gene medicines. Kathleen Triman completes the volume with an outline of the genetic strategies designed to improve our understanding of the structure and function of 23S ribosomal RNA in E. coil. |

An assessment of needs and obstacles experienced by South Asian immigrants in accessing social, educational and healthcare services, using a program planning and evaluation approach. $49.99 This investigation involved assessment of humans service needs, along with obstacles experienced in seeking services, of first generation south Asian immigrants residing in Central New Jersey, using the Program Planning and Evaluation Framework (Maher, 2000). The resulting information formed the basis for a report to "The New Americans Program", an initiative of the United Way of Central Jersey (UWCJ), to assist that agency in the design of culturally sensitive programs for this target population. The impetus for this study arose from the existing disparity between the increasing presence of South Asian immigrants groups in Central New Jersey and lack of appropriate services to meet their post-immigration needs. Relatedly, this investigation aimed to contribute to knowledge about South Asian immigrants. Twenty structured, in-depth, in-person needs assessment interviews were conducted with South Asian immigrants (18 Asian Indian, 1 Pakistani and 1 Srilankan), recruited through community networking, informal advertising (e.g., notices on an ethnic website) and word of mouth. Results revealed that immigrants had many multi-faceted needs, most predominantly with regard to receiving an "orientation" to life in the United States encompassing general information, education and occasionally professional counseling/therapy. Additionally, needs were expressed variably by individuals, depending on their immigration status, gender and length of stay. The role of help seeking behavior and attitudes are discussed in this dissertation in light of access to various human services and presence of barriers to service utilization, along with their implications for program design. Presumed mediators of help seeking are also considered based on needs assessment results, at both pre and post immigration periods. Furthermore, implications for program design are outlined. Analysis and modeling of noninvasive measurement of tissue chromophores by the Optical Pharmacokinetic System. $49.99 Efficient design of anti-cancer treatments involving radiation- and photo-sensitizing therapeutics requires knowledge of tissue-specific drug concentrations. This dissertation investigates the utility of the Optical Pharmacokinetic System (OPS), a fiber-optic based elastic-scattering spectroscopy device, to noninvasively quantitate concentrations of sensitizing compounds and hemoglobin within tissue in vivo.;The OPS was used to quantitate concentrations of motexafin gadolinium (MGd), in mouse tissues in vivo and in situ. An algorithm was developed to quantify MGd absorbance by integration of the MGd peak absorbance area, thereby relaxing the requirement that the extinction coefficient be known a priori. Concentrations measured by OPS were well-correlated with measurements by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).;Compartmental pharmacokinetic models were developed from tissue-specific MGd concentrations measured by OPS and HPLC. Models predicted both rapid initial distribution and slow elimination of MGd in plasma, fast transport of MGd out of the skin, and MGd retention at long times in the tumor. In vivo tumor MGd concentrations measured by the OPS were estimated by a linear combination of the plasma, tumor, and skin PK profiles.;A theoretical analysis of the OPS measurement of tissue was conducted using a Monte Carlo (MC) model of light transport through tissue that included discrete blood vessels. Simulation results motivated extensions to a previous analysis algorithm, including: (1) a novel analytic functionality between mean photon path length and total absorption coefficient; and (2) incorporation of a vessel correction factor to account for the pigment packaging effect of discrete vessels on the OPS-estimated absorption coefficient. These extensions improved OPS-estimates of both silicon phthalocyanine (Pc4) and hemoglobin concentration in a mouse xenograft in vivo following photodynamic therapy (PDT).;Mathematical models were utilized to |

Angelic Inspiration $11.46 I have been married twenty-three years and have four beautiful daughters. I have loved poetry all my life. I’ve been through a lot of life’s lessons; most of them have been very hard for me to cope with. I started writing poetry as therapy to help me with the loss of my two middle daughters. Once I got started, it just came naturally to me. Now poetry is a big part of my life. The poetry in this manuscript is inspirational and about angels; these things are important in my life and they have inspired me to write with God’s help. This book to me is inspirational and spiritual. I hope that others see it in the same light that I do. I hope you enjoy them. |

Attention to Romantic Alternatives $59 Consistently, attention to romantic alternatives has been linked to levels of commitment among couples. With the advent of Internet dating, it is necessary to extend current theories of commitment into the realm of online relationships. Specifically, it is important to detect any differences between Internet and traditional daters on levels of commitment, and, more importantly, on attention to romantic alternatives. Given the paucity of research on this topic, it is essential to understand this phenomenon better. This book, therefore, provides a unique look into the relationships of traditional and online daters and how each dating modality affects the respective relationships. This was accomplished by comparing traditional and online relationships across a variety of self-report measures. This analysis should help shed light on the future of dating and the type of impact it will have on the fundamental nature of romantic relationships and should be especially useful to professionals in Psychology, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, any other field that studies romantic relationships, as well as purveyors and utilizers of Internet dating sites. |

Bifunctional polymeric conjugates for contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging-guided noninvasive photodynamic therapy of cancer. $49.99 Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive clinical cancer treatment modality. It involves the delivery of photosensitive drugs to target tissues, followed by their light irradiation. Upon irradiation, excited photo sensitizers react with biomolecules to produce toxic singlet oxygen species that cause cell death and tumor necrosis. Currently available photosensitizers are low molecular weight compounds, which show poor tumor specificity and low accumulation, leading to low efficacy phototoxicity. High molecular weight polymer-photosensitizer systems show increased accumulation in tumors due to enhanced permeation and retention (EPR) effect, leading to improved tumor specificity and lower toxicity. Effective therapy also requires efficient detection of tumors and determination of the timing of maximal accumulation of drugs in tumors. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CE-MRI) is routinely used in clinics for tumor detection as MRI provides anatomic images with high spatial resolution. A bifunctional polymeric conjugate with both photosensitizer and MRI contrast agent will confer dual functionality of noninvasive detection of tumors using MRI and minimally invasive photodynamic treatment of cancer lesions. However, such systems for dual imaging and photodynamic therapy are currently unavailable in clinics. For this thesis research, we designed bifunctional polymeric conjugates containing photosensitizing drugs and MRI contrast agents. Such conjugates would provide efficient tumor detection and assist in determining the timing of maximal accumulation of the conjugates in tumors. Image acquisition would further allow guiding the site-directed irradiation of tumor tissues. The bifunctional conjugate, PGA-(Gd-DO3A)-Mce 6 was synthesized by covalent conjugation of Gd-DO3A and mesochlorin e6 onto high molecular weight poly(L-glutamic acid). Furthermore, PGA-(Gd-DO3A)-Mce6 was modified via conjugation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) onto polymer backbone, |
